French President Francois Hollande offers support after attacks on Canadian soil
French President Francois Hollande took a moment to touch on recent tragedies on Canadian soil before he and his world power counterpart got down to business in Banff Sunday.
There have also been tragic acts here and I would like to extend to you, dear Stephen, the full friendship of France in these circumstances. In other moments, not so far in the past, we were also touched by such dramatic acts, Hollande told Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in front of assembled media.
He was speaking of the brazen slaughter of two soldiers, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo in Ottawa and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent near Montreal.
Sunday, Banff National Park was the scenic host for talk on serious issues between Harper and Hollande.
Harper said it marked the first visit by a president of France to Canada’s west.
We are greatly honoured by the visit, Harper said.
But also it is an important visit because for Canada, France is one of our most important relationships in the world.
It is a country with which we’ve had important International, cultural and economic links literally for centuries, and we continue to work Francois and I very closely together.
Hollande likewise called the state visit an honour.
For many French businesses this is a dynamic region where we are helping provide the best technologies that we have mastered,Hollande said.
Hollande said the two world leaders would discuss several recent issues of mutual apprehension.
Notably in Syria, Iraq and Ukraine. I know how important that subject is in Canada. To those great challenges I add climate change. We have decided to act together for the benefit of our countries and the planet,Hollande said.
